Legacy Software Modernization — From 2000s Systems to Fast Modern Apps

That desktop app from 2007 still runs the business. We replace it piece by piece, without stopping the business.

The reason you’re here

Sound familiar?

  • The software works, but it is slow, ugly, and every new hire needs a week of training to survive it.
  • One person knows the codebase. They left in 2019, or they are about to.
  • It only runs on Windows, on the office LAN, on a machine nobody is allowed to reboot.
  • Every small change costs weeks and breaks two things you did not touch.
  • No mobile access, no API, no audit trail — and an auditor just asked about all three.

Every one of those is a solved problem. Below is exactly how we solve it, what it costs you in time, and what you get to keep at the end.

What you get

Legacy Software Modernization, delivered as concrete pieces of work

Codebase & risk audit

What the system actually does, which parts are load-bearing, where the data lives, and what will bite during migration. Delivered as a written report you keep.

Incremental migration plan

Strangler-fig sequencing: the new app takes one module at a time while the old one keeps running. No freeze, no all-or-nothing cutover weekend.

Data migration & reconciliation

Schema mapping, cleanup, dual-write during transition, and row-level reconciliation reports so finance can verify nothing moved.

Modern web rebuild

Sub-second pages, works on any device, keyboard-first for power users who currently do everything in one hand on a keypad.

API layer for the old system

When a full rewrite is not worth it, we wrap the legacy core in a clean API so new products can be built around it today.

Security & compliance uplift

Real authentication, roles, audit logs, encrypted backups and a tested restore — the things the 2007 build never had.

How we work

Small first step. Measured result. Then scale.

  1. 1 · Audit (1–2 weeks)

We read the code, interview the people who use it daily, and produce a fixed-price modernization plan.

  2. 2 · Foundation

New schema, auth, deployment pipeline, and a reversible bridge between old and new.

  3. 3 · Module-by-module cutover

Highest-pain module first. Users move over a group at a time, with the old screen one click away until they stop using it.

  4. 4 · Decommission

Last module migrated, data reconciled, legacy server archived and shut down. Handover docs included.

Questions we get asked

Before you email us

Can we keep working while you rebuild?

Yes — that is the entire point of the approach. The old system stays live and authoritative until each module is proven in the new one. Nobody gets a two-month feature freeze.

Do we lose ten years of data?

No. Migration runs with dual writes and reconciliation reports that compare row counts and balances between old and new. We do not decommission anything until those reports come back clean and you sign off.

Our system is VB6 / MS Access / classic PHP. Do you touch those?

Yes. Those are the exact systems most in need of this work. We have to read the old code carefully rather than guess at business rules — a lot of the value is in recovering rules that were never documented anywhere else.

Is a rewrite better than buying off-the-shelf?

Often it is not, and we will tell you when a package plus configuration is the cheaper answer. Rewrites earn their keep when your process is the competitive advantage and no product on the market fits it.
